My Philosophy Regarding the Role of Technology in Education
I believe that technology can and should be used on a regular basis within the classroom. Technology can be used for formal instruction, for self-directed learning, for peer evaluations, for formative assessments, and for summative assessments.
This website is designed to show the benefits of technology integration - benefits for my fellow teachers and for our students.
Today's students, in this ever-changing (and quickly-changing) world must learn differently than previous generations. Technology integration allows students to learn not just facts and figures but to learn how to learn, where to find accurate and trustworthy information in this digital age, and how to think critically. With this in mind, it is important for me to educate my fellow educators about technology integration, so that we can all better facilitate our students' learning through technology. Technology not only allows students to keep up with changing times and to think critically, but, done well, the integration of technology into the classroom also increases student engagement.
In addition to helping students learn better, technology really can improve our lives as teachers. Though it may take some time and concentrated effort to learn how to use the technology available as we begin integrating tech into our classrooms, it can save us time in the long run. I am reminded of the hours my mom, a now-retired English teacher, spent grading objective quizzes and tests at home. With technology, we can spend a bit more time inputting the questions into an online quiz format up front but save hours of grading as the online quiz can automatically grade the quiz. The added benefit is that, not only does it grade the quiz for you, but your students see their results immediately and know what they need to work on, and you see all their results and can edit your instruction as needed.
I believe that all students should have the opportunity to use technology, whether the school has a one-to-one policy or I have to create station rotations to ensure that all students have appropriate access to technology regardless of their background.
Technology use in my classroom will follow FERPA (The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and CIPA (Children's Internet Protection Act) guidelines, protecting students and their families, and will follow copyright and fair use laws in the ethical use of content found both online and elsewhere.
In my classroom, we will use technology to become both positive digital citizens by using the Internet, social media, and other media in an ethical and responsible way and exceptional digital leaders by using the Internet, social media, and other media to advance the well-being of others, both here at home and abroad. My Philosophy Regarding Communication
With effective interpersonal communication skills, I will reduce students' misunderstandings, boost students' self-esteem and morale by offering timely and effective feedback, encourage students to take risks and make difficult decisions, increase student engagement, help students achieve their goals, improve relationships, and build trust between myself and my students.
With regular and timely communication with the caregivers of my students, I will reduce misunderstandings, boost caregivers' confidence in their child's ability to succeed, and build trust between myself and my students' caregivers so that we can work collaboratively to help their child succeed and reach their fullest potential.
